Cameroon, blessed with abundant natural resources, faced significant deforestation challenges due to unsustainable logging practices, agricultural expansion, and population growth. Recognizing the urgency to address environmental degradation, Cameroon Agenda for Sustainable Development (CASD) initiated proactive interventions to promote reforestation and sustainable land management practices.
Background: In the early 2000s, Cameroon witnessed a surge in deforestation rates, threatening biodiversity, exacerbating climate change, and impacting local communities reliant on forest resources. Concerned CSOs, such as CASD, Green Cameroon and the Cameroon Association for the Protection and Education of the Child (CAPEC), joined forces with governmental agencies and international partners to combat deforestation.
CASD implemented multifaceted strategies encompassing community engagement, capacity building, and advocacy. From 2013 -2015, the organization conducted awareness campaigns, educating communities about the importance of forests, and trained local people in agroforestry techniques especially in the North West Region. Moreover, CASD facilitated the establishment of community forest management committees to empower locals in decision-making processes regarding Bafut Forest resources.
The collaborative efforts bore fruit as reforestation initiatives gained momentum. Community involvement fostered a sense of ownership, leading to sustainable forest management practices. Reforested areas witnessed biodiversity restoration, improved water retention, and enhanced carbon sequestration. Moreover, economic opportunities emerged through sustainable forest products, bolstering local livelihoods.
Civil society interventions played a pivotal role in reforesting Cameroon, showcasing the effectiveness of community-driven approaches in environmental conservation. However, continuous support and concerted efforts from all stakeholders are imperative to ensure the sustainability of reforestation endeavors and preserve Cameroon’s natural heritage for future generations.
